2027 Social Security COLA: Key Details on the 3.6% Increase

The Social Security Administration has officially announced the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027. This annual adjustment is designed to help benefits keep pace with inflation.

Here is a straightforward breakdown of the upcoming changes, payment schedules, and instructions on how to verify your specific benefit amount.

The 2027 Benefit Adjustment

For 2027, there will be a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment.

  • Average Impact: This adjustment will raise the average retirement benefit by approximately $75 per month.

  • Total Reach: The increase will provide financial relief to 76 million Americans, encompassing nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries and 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients.

Payment Schedule

The increased payments will be distributed based on the type of benefits you receive:

  • SSI Recipients: Increased payments will begin on December 31, 2026.

  • Social Security Beneficiaries: Increased payments will begin rolling out in January 2027.

How to Check Your New Benefit Amount

Beneficiaries have two options for receiving their updated 2027 benefit information:

1. View Online Early (Late November) You can view your exact new benefit amount up to three weeks before statements are mailed. To access this early, you must log into your online my Social Security account and opt into paperless notices by November 18.

2. Receive by Mail (December) If you do not opt into paperless notices, the Social Security Administration will mail a newly simplified, one-page COLA notice to your address on file throughout the month of December.

How the COLA is Calculated

The annual adjustment is not an arbitrary figure. The 3.6% COLA for 2027 is determined by tracking the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). This index measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban wage earners and clerical workers for a market basket of consumer goods and services.
